Dr. Yu

A friend or colleague you look in the eyes, but a mentor, is placed on a pedestal. A hero is thought of that much higher. Webster defines "hero" as a "man distinguished for exceptional courage, fortitude, or bold enterprise - one idealized for superior qualities or deeds." All of us here and all who knew him well can consider themselves blessed. There are not many who can say they knew a true hero - we can. By all accounts, Dr. Yu was a hero.

Dr. Yu was a man who wore many hats in his lifetime. Residency director, Chief of Podiatry of St. Vincent's Charity, Chairman of the Board of the Podiatry Institute, Chief of Surgery at the Ohio College, #l lecturer, Teacher, Expert witness, physician in private practice. Leader in our field of medicine, Mentor - just to name a few. But, the hat he wore which he most coveted was that of a devoted husband and loving father. He accomplished, in his short time with us, what most of us could never accomplish in a whole lifetime. Dr. Yu was a hero.

He spent a lot of time away from his family. I know this because I was one of his residents - and as a resident, I know that he spent a tremendous amount of time with us and working on his career. But, never once was his family far from his thoughts. He would usually have Barb or a couple of his kids with him at seminars. He talked about his family all the time - trips they went on or beaming about his kids' accomplishments. And, there were always photos of his family in all his lectures. He was intensely proud of his family. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the Yu Family for so generously sharing this man with us.

He will never be far from our hearts. He will always be regarded as a hero. He will be very dearly missed.
